Dear 41ers worldwide,

it is with great sadness that I have to report the death of our friend  Otto  Adelhofer  who died on Friday, January 9, 2004 being very ill during the year 2003.

It is not easy in a few words to reflect the extent of the loss felt by passing of a 41er such as Otto has been. For nearly 3 decades Otto was one of the most popular and well known 41er, not only national but also international. In Austria we called him „Otto Nationale“ and for 41- International he brought the flame of friendship to our members in all continents the 41-Association is present.

As a Tabler Otto was a member of RT 1 in Vienna. In 1979 he joined Club 41 Wien. In his profession Otto was a leading member of IBM’s PR-Team. In this function he edited the com- pay’s magazine. Being perfect in such belongings it was only a little step to vote for him as an editor of Austria’s National magazine „Contacte“ – a job he did for nearly 15 years. For 1989/90 he was elected as National President of Club 41 Österreich and only one year later he was the leading representative of 41-INTERNATIONAL. At the AGM in Agde 1990 he be- came President of 41-INTERNATIONAL. In this period he acted very close with his Vice- President Indu Chandhok from India. The „Indu Chandhok Foundation“ started in 1991 a youth exchange programme between Europe and India. This was the beginning of the succsessful YAP-Programme and Otto acted for several years as a Zone-Coordinator for Europe. After his time as a Immediate Past-President of 41-INTERNATIONAL the international board asked him to be an Archivist and to collect all material concerning 41-INTERNAIONAL. Otto was perfect in English and so he supported me in editing the „Courier“ and the International Directory for about 20 years.

Discussing 41 matterrs, telling jokes, drinking one (or some more) glasses of beer with him –all that will be missed by his friends, but he will remain in our hearts as a perfect 41er living the principels of ROUND TABLE but being full of tolerance to everybody in 41. I am sure that all of us who have known Otto will feel the touch of his friendship as long as we are 41ers.

Whenever Otto was travelling his wife Ingrid was beside him. She is well known everywhere.Our deepest sympathy goes to her and to Otto’s family.

I have received the very sad news about Jimmy Kirk who passed away yesterday morning (Sunday). I have lost a very dear friend and I am in chock and it is hard for me to understand that we will not again meet Jimmy and enjoy his tremendous humour and his personality and extensive friendship. I also think a lot about Heather who have lost her husband after so many years of marriage and of their son Andrew and daughter Janet who have lost a dear father. Jimmy loved his family and they too loved him and they all will miss him so much.

Jimmy has been staying several times in the home of Karin and me and we have been visiting him and his family in South Africa. Last time was September of this year when he arranged a trip to Kruger Park where we slept in tents in the bush in a bush camp and walked with rangers for 3 days among other things on the tour he prepared for us before the AGM of South Africa, and then we again were together in October in Interlaken in Switzerland for the HYM Meeting. Only a few days ago I received an e-mail from Jimmy thanking Karin and me for being his friends. He wrote that he was lucky to have such good friends and that he was sad we were so far apart. I feel that we were lucky to have had the luck to meet such a loving person as Jimmy. He also wrote that he was looking forward to meet us again in Arras if God wanted it to happen.

Sadly God did not want this to happen. Life can be so rude and not just.

The South African Association and 41 International have lost a person who was a true friend and a true tabler.

All honour to his memory and may he rest in peace.

Dear fellow tablers. Now is the time to sit down and think about the year which is soon coming to an end. This year has, like almost every year has, brought both things to enjoy and things that we would have liked to be without. It is not within our task to decide what we would like or not, but it is within our power to decide whether and how the different incidences are to influence our lives. To be in the possession of a positive mind, and to be able to laugh of the things that we find funny or is not able to change, is worth a lot.

This year brought to Karin and me the sorrow of her having to go through an operation. She had the herniated disc removed and she is recuperating fine and will soon be fit for fight again and to travel with me and meet our international friends. This year has also to us/me brought so many good times with friends from all over the world. Good experiences which were beyond our imagination. Friends who called with their support and good wishes, and friends who also called because they needed our support or advice. I hope that we were able to do just a little bit of help. I would like to thank all of you who we have been in contact with. For your consideration, thoughts and advise given and for being so positive and true TABLER friends.

Finally I would like to send you and your families our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

We look forward to meet you again in 2004.

I hope that this new page will facilitate the search of the 41 Friends in the world and the inter-club contacts .

Building this new page I have tried to assure a good privacy policy because  if it is very easy to obtain the e mail address of a Friend with known name, it is not easy to obtain the same address of a friend only because member of a specific club. However it is easy to find the address of a Club (by name of the town) with own internet page/site.

First of all I would like to thank you for attending the International AGM in Copenhagen on April 4th. to 6th. This year it was combined with the National AGM of Denmark.
I was so pleased to notice that 16 member countries attended this event, and I know that we have never in Denmark been so many people for the Get Together Party and Gala as we were this time. Thank you all.
Secondly I also would like to expres my gratitude for the outstanding support and friendship shown to me in my election as President of 41 International. And for all the good wishes for Karin and I in the busy year that we face.
Last but not least please accept my best wishes for you and your families for the Easter Season.

My dear 41er and Family,

At the outset Geetha and I extend to you and your near and dear ones Merry Christmas Greetings and a very Happy, healthy and enjoyable 2003.  May the bygone year be one of lesson and reckoning on our duties and the future year full of Hope, Happiness and Amity.

Lets continue our journey of life with an all pervading love and cheer among friends.

At this moment my mind goes to the difficult moments at Brasov (April) which we have overcome to a large extent.  I cannot but thank and express my reverence to those who hosted us in Germany, Austria, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, France, South Africa, Belgium and Switzerland and gave me the strength, courage and conviction to avert the split in 41 Intl.  The support from UK is praise worthy.  What was initiated as a bold step at Dillingen (8^th June) culminated in to a flower of joy at Reid (30^th June) and lets enjoy the fruit at Copenhagen (5^th April 2003) and thereafter the seeds of Friendship to nurture.  I am glad that the 41 Intl had the unanimous support in its task from well wishers and Associations.  On behalf of the Board I thank everyone of you.

At this juncture, before the bells of New year ring, two thoughts flash to my mind.

v    Let me reiterate what our 41 Intl. founders said “It is a commitment to practice without restraint of our values – Friendship, Tolerance, Agreement and Action that will allow us to free ourselves from Individual differences and to make a success of 41 Intl.”

v     As an Indian ( I am proud it’s the biggest democracy with a rich culture) I thank everyone for the opportunity and commit to the passage of wise words from “Bhagavad Gita “

“Your right is to work only, but never to the fruit thereof – let not the fruit of action be your object, nor let your attachment be to inaction.  Perform your duties and be indifferent to success or failure this equanimity is called yoga!!”

  Let friends and friendship alone be the guide and essence of our actions.

Dear friends and tablers in 41 International.

From Denmark comes the wishes of a Merry Christmas and a happy and
prosperous New Year for you and your families.
Time is flying by as usual and it is hard to understand that another
year soon comes to an end.
The year has tablerwise been quite a turbulent year. I don't think that
what happened with the Non-tabler issue was something that the
membercountries really wanted. Many emotional feelings were brought up,
sometimes pushing aside the common sense, allowing us to forget why we
are here as tablers. We are not here to fight each other, instead we are
here to make and stay friends, live and work in tolerance and function
as clubs in each National Association. But I am very pleased that the
countries lived up to their responsibility and worked together and
related their thoughts and ideas to the International Board which then
did everything in their power to make ends meet.
I think everyone of us look forward to having this ratified in
Copenhagen.
Lets for the future keep the goal of friendship and tolerance in sight.
This is my wish for 41 International and each and every one of you at
the end of this year.
I thank you for good friendship and company and many excellent
experiences during the year 2002.
Finally my wife Karin and I look forward to greet as many of you as
possible welcome for the pretour beginning March 27th. 2003, and
naturally the International and Danish AGM in Copenhagen April 4th. to
6h. 2003

Report of Incoming President Beat Berger in  Int. AGM   in South  Africa

ADDRESS TO THE MEETING in Cape Town

Mr. President, dear delegates and guests,
I really feel honoured that you have given me the opportunity to serve as your incoming president! Thank you for your trust and faith you have shown in me! I would also thank my association for proposing and supporting me. Thank you all!
Every incoming president has the opportunity to set his own targets for his presidential year. After spending a lot of thought of possible targets for my year, I have come to the conclusion that there must be a better way to serve our organization.
One of the given things is that a presidential year lasts only one year. There are only 2 official meetings taking place in an official year: The HYM and the AGM! You all know how fast a year passes and how little can actually be achieved in such a length of time!
As Herbert Potzinger wrote in his note to the AGM in Denmark, we find ourselves in a time of change. I am not only thinking of the changes concerning the people in the different offices, but rather of the changes which will have to come to make our association and the association of Round Table more attractive and so to secure our future!
All of us have to be grateful to the founder of Club 41 International. Without their ideas, their driving power and commitment we would not all be assembled here today and be able to enjoy true South African hospitality during this AGM! Everything seems to be o.k. apart from one thing: The membership rates of Round Table are diminishing alarmingly. As we purely depend on the well being of Round Table, it will be effecting our association in the future, should we like it or not! The IRO’s will see this afternoon during their meeting that even the increasing of the age limit to 45 years has not helped at all!
Let me tell you about my vision: Our house “Club 41” is built of the foundation of “Round Table” and has reached conditions where some alterations have to be made:
Maybe we should reinforce our foundations by adding ex-WOCO-members, i.e. Apex, active 20/30, Kinsmen, etc. ?
Maybe we should build in bigger windows to have more light into the rooms by improving the communication with Round Table and furthering our YAP-Program?
Maybe we should restore the trusses, the ceiling and the roof to protect us from complacency?
Maybe we should redecorate and refurnish the house without changing the building parameters, but by blending antiques with modern stile?
All this will allow new creative thinking to flow in and will give us the courage to build for the future. One needs only to look at the Cape Dutch architecture, which has been restored and put to good use around us to prove this point!
As you can imagine, all of this cannot – in addition to the day-to-day business and the other matters to be attended to - be achieved in my year of Presidency. Therefore, the continuity of the leadership in our organisation is one of the most important issues during these activities. It is my desire that all actions on this subject should have a Universal approach thus ensuring continuity. My task in this regard will be to ascertain that the renovation and improvements will start very well and that I will work very close with my Vice President Sam and the Vice President Elect Michael, thus living up to our responsibility as office bearers of Club 41 - on national and international levels! We have to see what we can do to improve our situation. There is no need for immediate action, we have sufficient time to evaluate the problem, to have fruitful discussions, and to reach decisions that will safeguard the prosperous future of Club 41 at all levels!

Considering the above, I chose my motto as: Let’s go forward together!

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT TO THE AGM IN CAPETOWN, APRIL 27^th 2001

Dear friends 41-ers,

After the HYM in Larnaca, Cyprus, I have visited the AGM of  41 Clubs SOUTH AFRICA in the beautiful landscape of  Drakensberg, the Regio TriRhena-Meeting, with the AGM of  Club 41 SUISSE onboard a ship.
This meeting had an international touch, because  41-ers of Switzerland, Germany and France organized this event together and the presence of guests from abroad was a very good sign. Finally I took part at the AGM of  OT FINLAND in Kauiainen, where I had the pleasure to meet a lot of old friends.
I had also the intention to take part in the AGM´s of Ex-Table DENMARK and the AGM of the ASSOCIATION in Eastborne last weekend, but unfortunately I could not join these meetings because of health-problems. Therefore Past- President Luc visited Denmark and Secretary Freddy the AGM of  Great Britain & Ireland.
Today I am happy to be here with you all in lovely Capetown, because it was not sure till last week, that I will be able to travel to South Africa. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all associations which has hosted me in this club-year. I will allways remember the friendship and fellowship you gave to me.
Friends, the last year in 41-International was a very busy one. It has been the year of big changes. Freddy Kachelhofer will finish his tasks as Secretary & Treasurer here at this AGM and will be followed by Marc Niederlender.  
Peter Poech, who has done a very good job for 20 years, released his last edition of Courier this February. Wolfgang Roesel, who has the intention to take over this task, will indroduce his ideas and his team at this meeting.
Renato Bonfini as Web Editor takes care of the presentation of Club 41 in the Internet and does his job very well. To surf in the 41-Int. home page is a great pleasure. Internet is the perfect medium for quick information & communication. The new YAP Zone Coordinator in Europe Jacques Menival works for the benefits of our youth with great devotion.
Dear delegates, I have laid down my thoughts and my opinion concerning our movement in my articles in the Courier and my messages in the 41-Int. home page.  Let me sum up some of them:
* I am conviced that 41-International is a big and strong organization and am no pessimistic concerning the future of our movement. I believe in the fact that the quality of our members is more important than quantity in any case
* 41 is no Service-Club, but we should try to substitute Round Table in the realization of comunity-service-projects.
* 41 is The Organization for Ex-Tablers, or the Following-up-Organization of Round Table.
* I am not  lucky with the wording of paragraph 3 (c ) of the Rules of 41-Int. ( „honorary“ members and no rights even in the own Club).
* Naming: A worldwide standardized name would certainly be better, than the various different names of the National Associations at the present time. ( Club 41 ....., because we also say „41-International“).
Coming to the end of my report I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to you all, dear delegates, National Presidents and IROs for you full support you gave me during the year of my presidency. I also have to thank you, Officers of the International Board and the members of the International Staff, for the very good cooperation and assistance. And finally always keep in mind my motto:
TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG
Together we are strong, when we stick together in our clubs and in the national associations, when we support the objects of 41 International.  
Together we are strong, when we IMPROVE our contacts to ROUND TABLE because Round Table is the Past and the Future of our Organization.

MESSAGE OF HERBERT POTZINGER, PRESIDENT OF 41-INTERNATIONAL  February 2001

Dear friends 41-ers,
let me start with a short review of our HYM in Larnaca on 7^th October, 2000.
By electing Marc NIEDERLENDER as Secretary and Treasurer of 41 International, who succeeded   Freddy KACHELHOFER in his office, an important decision was taken. Marc prevailed over both other candidates Alan REYNOLDS and Glauco ZAGO in the electoral procedure and will start his office after the AGM in Capetown by end of April 2001. On behalf of 41 International I want to wish Marc all the best for his future tasks and a successful  office. Many thanks to Alan and Glauco who were ready to offer their services for that election.
The new YAP Zone Coordinator in Europe Jacques MENIVAL has presented his programme. I am convinced that he will be very involved for the youth´s sake. All the best regards to him for a fruitful fulfilment in his activities.
After the HYM of 41 International in Kerteminde, Denmark, from October 5^th to 7^th 2001, Club 41 Romania will host the AGM of 41-International in Brasov, last weekend in April 2002.
According to the application of Sammy SAMPATH, candidate for the 41-Int. Vice-Presidency 2001/2002, the HYM 2002 will be hosted in Bangalore of  Clubs 41 India. The AGM 2003 was conferred to Denmark.
  Furthermore let me draw your attention to the presentation of Club 41 in the INTERNET (www.club41international.com). We are very lucky to have our friend Renato BONFINI as WEB EDITOR, who does an excellent job. Join our Club 41 International 2000/01 official page with statements and reports, read the 41 Int. News and General News, take a look at the 41 Int. photo album, join the mailing list with nearly 150 members worldwide, visit the pages of the member associations of 41-International, take a look at the 41 calender, and much more...
Peter POECH will lay down his longstanding, excellent job as Editor with this copy of Courier.
Having received all the honouring 41-International has to offer, it only remains to thank Peter for his idealistic efforts for the well-being of our organization.
Fortunately an excellent candidate has already volunteered for this task. I cannot mention his name now in order not to anticipate the decision in Capetown. Considerations about further development of Club 41
First and foremost let me say that 41-International is a big and strong organization. That is an essential fact for me. It is common knowledge that our organization consists of 19 member-associations with more than 40.000 members. On top of that there are clubs in further states which can become members of 41 Int. when reaching the entrance steps, such as Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Marocco, Zambia, and „Iberian Cluster“.
When there are certain problems in our preceding organization ROUND TABLE, above all degreasing member figures in some associations, we should not neglect that. Certainly low birthrate years are one reason for this development. We must try to find solutions as these rates will rather grow in the following years to come.
Not only Round Table, but also all clubs will more or less have to face this problem.
I also hear that young people in some states (e.g. South Africa) are no longer able or willing to pay for membership.
I think, however, that a tabler is member for about 10 years (entrance hardly ever before 30), wheras a 41-er can easily be member for about 30 years. This is the reason why 41 will once be the stronger organization than Round Table. The fact that the number of members in 41 will decline one day, won´t be faced by many of us.
In theory the death-rate and withdrawals from the club could be belanced by new entrances in order to keep up the number of memberships.
Do we really have to grow continually like a multi-national group? Is quality not better than quantity at all costs?
We cannot solve the problems of Round Table, yet we will certainly try to support them as good as possible.
The range of our possibilities is widely known. In the first place we should try to recruit suitable members for Round Table. A good example for that was given by Peter Taylor from OTD Mainz: in order to solve the shortage of recruits in Mainz, some Old-Tablers were looking for young men and founded a new Round Table.
A brilliant idea, isn´t it?
In any case we should be ready to support Round Table with their service projects, in continuing our mentality as Ex-tablers.
Moreover we should try to get in touch with leaving tablers in good time. When a club has reached a certain size (about 25 members) it would be favourable to found a new club!
Young clubs are attractive and more interested  in new members than older clubs with a lot of members.
Finally I think that our integration with Round Table should be more clearly expressed in our name.
Some suggestions:
41-INTERNATIONAL THE ORGANIZATION OF EX-TABLERS       or:
41-INTERNATIONAL THE FOLLOWING-UP ORGANIZATION OF ROUND TABLE
However, has Round Table also notized this symbiosis by considering this fact with an appropiate indication of Ex-Table/Club 41 as far as name and statutes are concerned??
Old Table Germany set two remarkable steps by concluding their new statutes in Celle in June 2000:
1. The maintenance of amicable relations to the „Active help of Germany´s Tablers“, states that OTD offers its help to the tablers by supporting  their service projects.
2. After previous investigation by the OTD-secretary-office basically only Ex-Tablers will be incorporated.
Clubs trying to incoporate Non-Ex-Tablers in future can be excluded from OTD.
This provision of German statutes goes beyond the rules of 41-International - vide below.
This is also remarkable as OTD is member of the Millenium International Working Group of Tablers (MIWT) and in the represented working paper of this group at the AGM in Graz, it was stated:
„Club 41 is a club of former Round Table Members and their friends.“
This formulation - among others - caused  great uneasiness, as it might cause a broad opening for our organization for Non-Ex-Tablers.
An exception - whatever the reason would be - should not turn into a rule!
Let me come back here to the rules of 41 International  and I mean that according to paragraph 3. ( c ) also Non-Ex-Tablers can be incorporated from 41-er clubs, namely as honorary members.
There are a number of topics which should be treated from working groups such as:
*   The question of double membership.
-  Standardization of integration rules, relief for Ex-Tablers.
-  Contacts to follow-up organizations of other young men service clubs such as: Apex, Active 20 - 30, Kinsmen.
-  Proposal to mention also the Hobbies of members, which could make contacts much easier.
Whatever a working group such as MIWT will suggest, can principally only be recommendations.
The  rules of 41-International are a kind frame work, which has to be accepted by our associations.
However, we should leave the associations a certain degree of personal freedom, especially in the spirit of tolerance, which is a main target of our organization.
The conditions in Germany or Switzerland are different to those in New Zealand or Indian Ocean!
Concluding my remarks I want to thank all the other International Officers and nearly all of you,  my dear 41-ers, for this year´s excellent collaboration. Soon I will start in the last period of my president´s year.
I am looking forward to our international AGM in Capetown, where I hope to meet a great number of you!
And always keep in mind my motto:  „TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG“
Together we are strong, when we stick together in our CLUBS and the NATIONAL ASSOCIATIONS, when we support the objects of 41-INTERNATIONAL.
Together we are strong, when we improve our contacts to ROUND TABLE, because Round Table is the past and the future of our organization.
